Last Meeting Minutes

Houston Canoe Club
General Membership Meeting
July 11, 2018
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt
Commodore Honey Leveen called the meeting to order, and introduced the officers. Present were Ms. Leveen, Vice Commodore Alice Nissen, Purser Kent Walters, Boatswain Paul Woodcock, and Recorder Frank Ohrt, as well as Webmaster Harmon Everett and Sergeant-at-Arms Ann Derby. Fleet Captain Natalie Wiest and Newsletter Editor John Rich were absent.

  Aswat Pati
Ms. Leveen noted the pre-meeting dinner and post-meeting gathering at Jax’s Grill. She then introduced Aswat Pati, a local Boy Scout, who described his Eagle Scout project of distributing bio-degradable trash bags along Buffalo Bayou and Spring Creek. He then passed out bags to all who wanted one.

Chris Arceneaux
Chris Arceneaux gave the Safety Minute. He recommended putting personal contact information in one’s boats, using ACA stickers. He pointed out that it not only facilitated getting one’s boat back if it gets lost, but also gives the Coast Guard a way to avoid mounting an un-necessary (and very expensive) search-and-rescue operation if the boat is found without a paddler.

Mr. Walters offered to let any member give the Purser’s report. Mr. Ohrt volunteered that the club was close to its projected budget, and that all was fine, like always. Mr. Walters said that, yes, that was pretty much true.

Mr. Woodcock gave the Boatswain’s report. We currently have 150 members. New members are Scott and Donjha Cook, Ken Daigrepont, and Stanley Okazaki. Visitors at the meeting were Craig Ahlhorn, Ron Blake, Luis Briones, Brent Hwang, Janice Walden and Jeff Witty.

Ms. Wiest being absent, Ms. Leveen gave the Fleet Captain’s report. Recent trips and leaders were:

June 23: Colorado River (Bruce Bodson),
June 30: Brazos river (Bruce Bodson),
July 7:    Trinity River (Bruce Bodson).

Un-official trips included Marshall Lake (Kent Walters), the Carolina Canoe Club’s Week of Rivers (Frank Ohrt), and the San Marcos River (Christy Long). Ms. Long reported that the tubers on the San Marcos were only on the river from noon to 5:00 pm, there were security officers actually paddling among them, and there were several boats following the tubers cleaning up trash! Hooray! We can all thank TRPA for their huge efforts on behalf of the river. (If you’re not a TRPA member, shame on you!)

Upcoming trips include the Neches River Rally, Sept. 8 (Fran Wilcox), and a paddle on Lake Woodlands (Julie Hammond).

  Dan Roy, Alice
Nissen, Don Harbour
Ms. Nissen announced next month’s speaker, Louis Aulbach, then introduced the evening’s speaker, Dan Roy, who described his adventures building a wooden kayak. He and member Don Harbour both brought their hand-built kayaks for the members to look at.

   Ms. Leveen adjourned the meeting.
