High Water on the Trinity

When rains up north push the Trinity River over its banks, some of that flood water is lost to the record books, because it eventually finds its way down into Galveston Bay without ever being registered by a downstream gauge. Geography says that it must be moving off to the west, but until 2016, we don’t know of anyone actually tracking this from the water. Guided by map, compass, and GPS, Joe Coker, Tom Douglas, Dave Kitson, David Portz, and Natalie Wiest paddled across the flooded basin, gathering data to share with river-related agencies. Now under several feet of water, natural landscapes had become unfamiliar, and the paddlers saw how man-made structures both funneled and spread the massive flow. Later on, one agency replied that some of their staff were a bit jealous of our outing.

An ACA member since 1995, Tom is a canoeing instructor, and has an interest in fluvial geomorphology.

Be sure to set this date aside on your calendar, then come out and support your club.

Vice Commodore,
Alice Nissen
