HOUSTON CANOE CLUB GENERAL MEETING
May 8th, 2013
Bayland Park Community Center

Commodore: Harmon Everett
The meeting was called to order by Commodore Harmon Everett at 7:02 P.M.
Harmon welcomed everyone and briefly explained the purpose of forming the Houston Canoe Club.
Harmon also introduced all Board Members and briefly went over the evening’s program.
Interested in including non-HCC Trips were mentioned and a reminder of next years 50th anniversary. If anyone knows someone from way back, please come forward.
FYI: Tom has his property for sale: $1million+.

Safety Minute:
Make sure to have a throw rope to assist others or to help get own boat out of a jam.

Frazier Baker offered suggestions as to how assist others while on shore or on the water.
To help get around is to use a paddle as a walking stick; on shore or entering the boat.

And a reminder if anyone in the group would like to share their safety tips, please address the board.

Vice Commodore: Philip Matticks
Philip Matticks introduced tonight’s guest speaker; Mike Howlett; Worked for Harris County - Caretaker for Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center in Humble.

We make every effort to show our appreciation to our guest by way of a gift on behalf of HCC. Mike Calbot was presented with an autograph book signed by our very own HCC member and author; Natalie Wiest.

Last months (April) were posted on the Newsletter. Motion accepted by John Bartos, and second by Frasier Baker. All in favor. A reminder as to where the minutes are posted (HCC Newsletter) and a brief discussion of what took place during our last General Meeting. Motion was passed to accept the minutes.

Financial Report-Treasurer: Bob Neager
As of the end of May; HCC had $4382.00 in the account.
We had $1155.00 from income and $1305.00 due to expenses.
HCC account is just about right on the money.

Fleet Captain: Dave Kitson
A monthly tally has been designed on the website for members to access to view all their posted miles.
A total of five trips were reported last month of April.
Buffalo River Trip (Ken Anderson shared his stories and forecast information-heavy rain and tornadoes.)
Higaldo Falls Festival (Terri, Keith, JonMichael, Harmon)
Charlotte’s Lake-Philip Matticks
Buffalo Bayou-Will & Collin Baker, his wife and others.
Over 1200 miles from several people.

Boatswain: Honey Leveen
Mentioned to all to make sure to sign in, pick up a name tag.
Also had mentioned to all of the selection of decals, business cards, bumper stickers &/or brochures for members to grab and share with others.
Introduced Jenny from Collage Station and she also joined. Collin was re-introduced, also John Answorst.

Newsletter: John Rich
A reminder to share stories and pictures with our News Editor.
Several trip reports were submitted in May to help build the newsletter. (Philip Matticks-Joe Coker-Natalie Weist-Paul Woodcock-Dave Kitson.
Just another way to share all the activities the club has to offer.

Conservation: John Bartos
Buffalo Bayou put in and take out may be closed for construction in certain areas. Information will be posted by John Bartos. Briar Bend will be opened.

Webmaster: Greg Walker
No show.

Open Discussion:
Christi Long & Ken Anderson shared stories regarding the Buffalo River Trip. Suggestions were made to learn how to control your boat. Take advantage with local trips to get more experience before attempting to paddle the Buffalo River.

Harmon among others joined in at Higaldo Falls; Trips, Festival, Antique Vehicles…a blast.

Philip among others paddled Charlottes Lake; (Huge rain storm within 20 minutes after our trip.) Charlottes Lake to Sulfer Cut, Mac Lake, paddled back into the far Cypress Trees.

Buffalo Bayou; Several people joined in. Stories of other boats that was lost due to the high water.

John Bartos shared Matt Author’s contact to access river in LaGrange.

And as a reminder to all members each month for an early dinner or later dinner; Several people joined Honey Leveen and her husband for an earlier dinner before the meeting at Jax. Several people got together for an after the meeting dinner at Jax’s Grill.
