Day Hikes in the Big Bend Ranch State Park
Sept. 13th & 18th
by
Louis Aulbach

Louis Aulbach will present a program on day hikes in the upper plateau of the Big Bend Ranch State Park. The program will be on September 13 at the REI store on Westheimer and on September 18 at REI-Willowbrook. Both programs will begin at 7:00 pm.

The Big Bend Ranch State Park is the largest state park in Texas, covering more than 300,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert wilderness. Embracing some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the Southwest, the park encompasses two mountain ranges containing ancient extinct volcanoes, precipitous canyons, and waterfalls. The area has been a crossroads of human activities for over 11,000 years.

Although the park is crisscrossed with old roads, trails and hiking routes, much of the park is accessible only to four wheel drive vehicles. However, the Main Road (Sauceda Road) is suitable for two wheel drive vehicles. This program will focus on day hikes into the back country from locations and campsites along the Main Road. Once you hike over the first rise and are out of sight of the road, the wonders of the park are available to you!
