Bayou Preservation Association’s Coastal Watershed...
Author Last Post

On September 20 and 21, an outstanding panel of speakers explored challenges to our region’s waterways and how our collective efforts can address them. The keynote presentation on day 2 of the event was a “Fireside Chat” with Dr. Andrew Sansom, Executive Director of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and Research Professor of Geography at Texas State University.

Beginning September 29, you can view the recorded symposium online: at Bayou Preservation’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXdhNViOJTrGWB8HMv4qkdg.

Day 1 of the Virtual 2023 Coastal Watershed Symposium got off to a strong start this morning with welcoming remarks from Mayor Sylvester Turner. To show off the attractiveness of our bayous, the mayor included photos of two paddlers that many of us know: Natalie Wiest paddling her canoe under an overhanging tree on Cypress Creek a little upstream from Huffmeister Road, and Rea Inglis surfing a wave on Cypress Creek just below Stuebner-Airline Road.

It isn’t too late to register for Day 2 of the Symposium, which will feature the keynote “Fireside Chat” with noted environmentalist Dr. Andrew Sansom. The session will begin at 8:00 AM and run until noon. You can read more about the symposium on the HCC Conservation Forum.

The Bayou Preservation Association’s Virtual 2023 Coastal Watershed Symposium will be held on the mornings of September 20 and 21. You can view the symposium’s full schedule HERE.

In addition to the keynote “Fireside Chat” with Dr. Andrew Sansom and comments by several city and county officials, the program will cover topics such as water quality, water conservation, land subsidence, stormwater management, trash cleanups, and coastal soils.

Dr. Andrew Sansom will be the keynote speaker for the Bayou Preservation Association’s virtual Coastal Watershed Symposium on September 20-21. For several decades, he has been a highly effective advocate for Texas’ wildlife, native plants, and natural landscapes. In addition to writing five books, he has edited more than 20 others, including our own Natalie Wiest’s Canoeing and Kayaking Houston Waterways. Dr. Sansom served as Executive Director of the Texas Nature Conservancy, and later as Executive Director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Currently, he is Executive Director of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and Research Professor of Geography at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. Among his other duties there, he manages the headwaters of the San Marcos River. Throughout these many roles, his effectiveness has come in part through his gift as a storyteller – ranging from a pensive reflection on the hubris behind the Wallisville Dam project to a heart-pounding account of a canoe trip down the Pecos River during high water.
