As many of you will recall, our ex-Commodore Honey Leveen has relocated to Fort Myers, Florida. Knowing that her apartment is VERY near to Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach, which have been much covered in the news of Hurricane Ian, we were extremely relieved to learn that she has come through the storm safely. Here is the note that we received from her:
It is a disaster zone here. We live right on the water – about 40’ from a bulkhead on a river feeding into the Gulf. We were in our on-site hurricane shelter 2 nights. It was not an unpleasant experience, it was just one we hope does not need to occur again. It was super well organized, we were well cared for. Employees stayed and were devoted throughout, even some who suffered big losses.
We absolutely fully intended to flood; we’re on the 1st floor. By some miracle, a big surge came from the opposite direction and stopped right before our building. Inside our apt is unscathed. About 200 dwellings here are uninhabitable. Our apt is fine! Our car got totaled, however. Our 2 kayaks are MIA, maybe they’ll turn up.
What you saw on the news is accurate. Incredible devastation here.
We are glamping, still without electricity, hot water, reliable internet. Weather is gorgeous. Neighbors have come together and help each other. We have plenty to be grateful for. www.shellpoint.org will fix and restore and handle all the accompanying headaches. They started doing this on Thursday. It will take a very long time.
