NL-2011-07 HCC Training
HCC Training at Hidalgo Falls
May 7, 2011
by
John Berlinghoff
On May 7, I took the second class, sponsored and partially funded by HCC on Canoe Safety. This was another wonderful course taught by Patti Carother’s folks. With only nine students there was lots of personal attention. Located at convenient Hidalgo Falls we went over kayaking strokes, rescue and general handling of a boat in flat to mild rapids. Book learning is nice, but is great to have someone watch what you are doing and correct it. I found out why my arms were always so tired. I made the classic mistake of using my arms too much and not my lower back. After that class I have watch other paddlers and came to the conclusion that we had lots of company in doing things wrong. I would even suggest that we have some lessons at the end of trips when people are pooped and might be receptive to a new way of paddling.
