HOUSTON CANOE CLUB GENERAL MEETING
June 8, 2011

Commodore Ken McDowell called the meeting to order.
Officers were introduced.
Honey Leveen introduced new members and guests.
Harmon Everett gave the safety minute on ticks and chiggers with emphasis on how to properly remove an embedded tick (use pointed, not flat, tweezers, grasp as close as possible to the head, and pull gently). Do not cover it with cream, vaseline or alcohol. There was a discussion on the difference between a red bug and a chigger. This will be the topic of the July Safety minute.
John Ohrt gave the minutes of the May general meeting which were accepted as read.
Harmon Everett gave the financial report. The checking account is now at Amegy Bank with some funds still being held at Chase until all checks clear. The CD is at Chase and will be moved to Amegy when it matures in August.
John Rich said to keep the excellent newsletter articles coming.
No conservation news was reported.
Paul Woodcock gave the Fleet Captain’s report. Past trips included a weekend trip to San Marcos which had beautiful weather, the Neches River Rendezvous on the new TPWD Davey Crockett paddling trail, the Brazos River from the S F Austin Park bridge to I-10 which had rapids and the ruins of an old steamship., the Sabine River over Memorial Day - which had ticks and chiggers, headwinds and eagles, the San Antonio River at Goliad, and a Sierra Club trip to West Bay.
Upcoming trips included a trip to Lake Charlotte, a Paddlefest planning trip to Dickinson Bayou, Clear Creek, and the Angelina River for the Bevilport paddling trail. As always, check the club web site for the complete schedule.
The program was a report and power point by Joe Coker and Dana Enos on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Joe Coker reported that both Southwest Paddlesports and Austin Canoe and Kayak offer a 10% discount to HCC members.
