Some of us decided to go up to Huntsville State Park for a fall paddle, camping and campfires before the coming of the winter months.
Getting there on Friday morning allowed you to get nice sites close to the water for easy access. It was real quiet until that afternoon when all the campers from the city came in and made the park wall to wall camping. Breakfast and lunch was on your own and Saturday Night was catered, from John and Regina McCullough from Crystal Lake, with a German meal, ending with German chocolate cake.
Good evening campfire and everyone had paddled on their own schedule. Paul and a group of guys put up a group party tent from Overstock - 30-foot that could house 20 plus people from the bugs. Paul did say NO to hauling this down the Sabine River for Labor Day due to the weight of this tent, yet made for car camping only. Great whites and blue herons were plenty, with the sounds of owls every night. A small 10-foot gator was spotted this weekend. This was a relaxing fall weekend of good friends, food, campfires and paddling.
Another OctPaddleFest is being planned for next year at the same place and time. See ya there!
