Reflections from the Commodore – HCC Connections
As Commodore of the Houston Canoe Club (HCC), I often receive a wide range of messages—requests for donations, membership inquiries, environmental initiatives, ballot petitions, and even boat sale postings. While these are part of the role, what I truly enjoy most are the heartfelt calls from longtime members looking to reconnect with the club and its community.
One such call came recently from a gentleman who reminisced about tandem paddling with his father during his teenage years. His father, Rennie Scheffield, was an active HCC member, and together they explored rivers across the Colorado, Mexico, Big Bend, and the Carolinas. Now retired—his father in Boerne and he in Houston—they reached out not only to reconnect but also to share a generous gift with the club. Along with their story came a collection of paddling and camping gear, which will be available for members to pick from at our next monthly meetings. These items will be given away, but you must be present to receive them.
I’m reminded of our recent 60th anniversary celebration, where we honored past members with a memorial poster. I spent a long time reflecting on each photo, imagining the adventures and memories they created through HCC. It’s moments like these that remind me of the deep connections and legacy our club and members hold.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.
