HCC Board meeting Aug. 6th. 7:00 - 8:43
The board meeting was attended by all officers except Bruce Bodson our Vice Commodore.
Tyrone gave his membership report - we have two new members that joined, one by the name of Eric Lib. We also have returning member Natalie Hanson from Blessing, Texas. The lifeblood of the club are our renewing members and this month we have Alice Nissen and Amy McGee. HCC membership is holding steady at 126 and currently our Facebook followers have risen to 1063. Thanks guys.
Tracy our treasurer reported a slow financial month, with a net loss for the year so far, but a healthy checking account balance.
The HASK club recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary, hosted by President Chuck Falk and featured the club founders Robert Stark and David Trail, who discussed the club’s impact on the community. The event was well-attended, with around 50 people, and included door prizes.
Several upcoming events were highlighted, including meetings organized by Harris County Flood Control District about flood mitigation measures, a film series by Ben Masters about Texas wildlife, the Greens Bayou Regatta, and the Greater Houston Environmental Summit.
Brent noted that the Neches Wilderness Race was organized for the benefit of mentally challenged students affiliated with a local community college. The race, known for its wild and challenging terrain, was well-attended and raised over $30,000 for scholarships.
A discussion was held about a Facebook post from a for-profit business, that was promoting beginner classes and outfitted group trips. While some members felt the classes could benefit the club by training new paddlers, others were concerned about the appearance of endorsement and potential commercialism. Ultimately, it was decided to restrict future postings on the club’s Facebook site, focusing instead on promoting HCC club events that maintain a clear distinction between club business and external promotions, ensuring fairness and avoiding potential conflicts of interest.
Our club policy states that all events posted on the HCC Facebook page must originate from a registered 501(c) non-profit organization. We aim to ensure that shared information reflects the club’s commitment to community service, education, and engagement.
