San Marcos Cleanup 03-01-2025
March 1, 2025
by Frank Ohrt

The HCC was represented on the usual Section 2, from San Marcos River Retreat to Scull’s Crossing,  by Dutch and Tracy Becker, Robert Langley, Natalie Hansen, and Frank Ohrt. It was a chilly (well, pretty dadgum cold!) night at the campground,  and this reporter would have slept better if a pair of Barred Owls hadn’t decided to declare their eternal love sometime in the middle of the night, right over his tent. The day quickly warmed up, though, and ended up sunny and almost hot.The water was seriously low (85 cfs), but, except for some scrapy spots now and then, the river was surprisingly paddleable.

There was more trash than in the last few years, mostly all small stuff, but nothing comparable to the “good” old days. No one fell in, and we were off the river by 1:30. We all ate well at the traditional barbecue dinner in the chapel, then sat around various campfires trying to stay awake long enough that we didn’t wake up at 4:30 in the morning with nothing to do.

Thanks to Grace Arianoutsos for dealing with the paperwork for the section. HCC members Tom Douglas and Constantine Platon joined up with Susan Eda on a downstream section of the river, but they’ll have to write their own trip report.
