Armand and Horsepen Bayous
July 5, 2024
by Natalie Wiest

I hadn’t been in a kayak for  some time and was pleased that Joe Coker and Christy Long joined me for a Houston Canoe Club trip on Armand Bayou on July 5.  It was only 84 degrees when we met in the parking lot at Bay Area Park at 8:30 and were underway by 9.  The wind was quite still as we set off, and the water level thankfully high easily covering the end of the boat ramp.

Our route included Horsepen Bayou, known to be a nice, short easy paddle so we could return before the heat really turned on.

It was a flat beautiful day to be out on the water as Joe and Christy’s photos show.  Both of them have posted a more complete set of photos on HCC’s “photos” .

In the distance you can see a great egret, and we had a number of nice bird sightings on the day although the high water cut down on the birds we would normally have seen working the mudflats.

It was warm enough that day the alligators were staying out of the sun and unusual for this route, we saw none.  Farther up Horsepen Bayou is a curious but delightful feature, a side channel that frequently has very clear water.  It’s always fun to duck in there and see what’s swimming around.

Joe and Christy both got nice photos.  As for me, my camera battery crapped out so I am thankful the two of them came well armed.

For my part, at least I got my gps working and was able to download our route map.  We paddled 5.39 miles in a little over 3 hours. It was about 91 degrees as we took our boats out of the water.  It was a lovely relaxed pace and great to be on the water again, with just enough breeze to make it comfortable.  We returned to the park and were on our way to Miller’s Café by noon.  Tasty burgers and fries were had by all.  Wish you could have joined us that day, but there will be other opportunities.  Stay cool and get your paddle on.
