Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Alice Nissen

The meeting was canceled due to Hurricane Beryl and flooded conditions in Houston.

Houston Canoe Club
Board Meeting
July 3, 2021
Recorder: Alice Nissen

The meeting was held via Zoom and called to order at 7:00 p.m. Officers in attendance were Brent Hwang, Commodore; Greg Fan, Vice Commodore; Christy Long, Fleet Captain; Bob Naeger, Purser; Tyrone White, Boatswain; Alice Nissen, Recorder; Harmon Everett, Newsletter Editor. Tom Douglas, Conservation Chairman, and Natalie Wiest, Ex-Officio, were in attendance.

Tyrone gave the membership report and stated that we gained two new members in June and two renewing members for a total membership of 144 and 1015 Facebook members.

Christy stated she welcomed new members to Facebook and sent the message, “Welcome to FB. Want to be a member? Come to our website.” FB blocked it twice.

Harmon stated the 27th of the month is the deadline for articles in the newsletter.

Bob gave the purser report and stated our insurance covers up to 50 active paddlers. Early June we went over that number. Not an immediate issue. Insurance now is $503 and the next tier for over 50 active paddlers is $740 per year. He will inquire about insurance for the 60th anniversary party which would be a one-time expense.

Christy gave the fleet captain report. She stated there were many scheduled trips in June with some cancelations. July slacked off a bit with one cancelation. Bruce planned several long mileage trips but has not turned in paddler mileages.

Greg stated we will watch a video next week at the July general meeting.

Natalie stated she will put a trip to Armand Bayou on the event calendar. She will investigate HASK’s speaker on the Trinity River for a possible future speaker.

Tom reviewed the topics he will discuss at the general meeting next week.

Brent and Christy lead a review of the 60th anniversary party and many topics were discussed: Christy shared the recent anniversary party meeting minutes; the party will be held at Bay Area Community Center (although date not confirmed); catered meals; single members will get one meal ticket and family members will get two; no silent auction; John Bartos will emcee; Joe will coordinate flotilla; Harmon will coordinate music; the 50th party was $15 per plate; vendor participation discussed and Tyrone volunteered to coordinate; quantity tee-shirt discounts and it was decided to order in bulk and sell at the event; door prizes (Tom offered to donate “Viva Texas Rivers”); photographer needed for the event; Christy will look into decorations; we will need a birthday cake; a guest speaker discussed; Natalie volunteered to help Alice contact former members.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00
