After running a shuttle, Sam and I unloaded, prepped and got on the water at about 9:15 AM.

A Tough Put-in
It was a beautiful morning as we started paddling.
This is the upper part of DeGray Lake, where the Caddo River enters it. There is no current. We meandered with the meanders, noting the abundant wildlife along the way.

We saw a rabbit, several egrets, a couple of little blue herons, a green heron and a few great blue herons, one osprey, a deer, an otter, a beaver, a sandpiper of some kind, crows, several black vultures and a solitary velociraptor (we didn’t see the others, but we know they were there).
We also saw one of the creatures from Alamogordo (remember the 1954 movie, “Them!”?) – a giant walking stick – coming out of the underbrush:
