Lynn Maughmer and Jimmy Jones, two Houston police officers, entered the first Texas Water Safari, a 500-mile, twelve-day canoe race that was being touted as the most unique, dangerous, and toughest boating event in the world. On April 29, 1963, fifty-seven boats and 127 participants were dispatched down two rivers and across five bays. Eleven days later, only two boats and four men remained in the running.
