Thanks to the Houston Club for cleaning the San Marcos River today, from the San Marcos River Retreat to Sculls Crossing! And a special thanks to Frank Ohrt for being the section leader for this stretch of river. A very special thanks to George and Anne Grant for donating the meat and cooking it (best BBQ we have every had). And finally, a very special thanks to Paula for helping me through 50 years of cleaning this river. Great work guys!
I should have mentioned Kevin Hutchinson. This is the second year in a row that he showed up with his raft. He can safely get a ton of trash through Cotton Seeds Rapids. And he is the only fishing guide who showed up.
Great Clean Up! I guess... It is always amazing to get so much trash out of the river, but it is a bummer that so much stuff is in the river in the first place. We had almost 200 volunteers including the Eyes, the Houston Canoe Club, the Dallas Downriver Club, the Texas State Water Ski club, the Texas State Plant Biology Society, the residents of the San Marcos River Ranch, the Texas Canoe and Kayak Racing Association, the Spring Woods Canoe Group, Boy Scout Troop 1631, and the Texas Rivers Protection Association (TRPA). The TRPA funded the event. And George and Anne Grant from Maxwell provided the best BBQ ever to over 120 of the volunteers who wanted to eat. Green Guy Recycling provided a trailer for the recyclables, and Guadalupe County will be picking up the tires and trash this week. Troy Swift and Bodie Langford let us use their property as drop off points for trash (and Troy hauled the trash to Spencers Canoes, who let us use their property as a temporary dump for all the trash, tires and recyclables). The City of San Marcos provided mesh bags and trash bags. Paula and I held our first San Marcos River Clean up in 1972, and we have organized at least one event per year, so we figure that this made 50 years of clean ups of this river. A huge thanks to everyone who helped!
