Lake Woodlands
Sept. 21, 2019
by Kent Walters
After a brief safety orientation, light check and PFD check, our little group of three got in the water from our purpose-built kayak dock and paddled to the opposite shore, observing the herons in full fishing mode. One speared a pretty good sized fish and walked back into the bank with it until he could work it down to a size he could handle.

We continued up to the bridge on the north end of the lake, past which we can usually only get about 100 yards into Panther Branch. We paddled upstream (there was a current) about a half mile in very primitive, peaceful environment, dodging several fallen trees and ducking under arched trunks until we finally came to one that would have made it necessary to get out (which I don’t do). There was still navigable water beyond that tree.

We paddled back downstream, enjoying the reduced effort as the current pushed us back to the lake. We made a couple of additional short forays, and then paddled back to the canal. We arrived early and talked while eating our snacks and drinking our beverages.
The concert started, and by the time Jason Bonham’s group started into “Whole Lotta Love”, I was dishing up our ice cream. It was a big hit. The audio quality was superb, and both groups were very enjoyable, in spite of my somewhat negative attitude going in about Peter Frampton.
