Board Meetings
October 2019
by John Rich

Have you ever wondered what goes on at HCC Board meetings?

The elected Board members get together on the first Wednesday of each month to conduct, communicate and coordinate the business of the club. Many of the members are working throughout the month, doing things like registering new members, renewing current memberships, paying bills, looking for guest speakers for meetings, editing the newsletter, organizing events, and so on. But all these people doing their particular duties throughout the month gather at the Bayland Community Center once a month, under the leadership of the Commodore, to coordinate their efforts, and discuss any issues that may have arisen. This is all behind-the-scenes work that many members may not even realize is taking place. The reason the club runs so smoothly is because of all this behind-the-scenes work, handling the myriad of details that require constant attention.

As an example of the kinds of matters they deal with, here's a list of the subjects the Board addressed at their September Board meeting:

• Ensuring that we have a guest speaker lined up for the next meeting.
• Getting a person and topic to present for a "Safety Minute".
• Disposition of the inactive club library materials.
• Planning for the club picnic; food, trash, shade, tables, parking, etc.
• For the online forum; to moderate or not moderate?
• Create an online Meetup group for paddle trips?
• Dealing with a T-shirt order, create an online sales capability?
• Creation of a Nominating Committee for the upcoming club elections.
• Do we want to apply for an L.L. Bean environmental service grant?
• Review the annual planning calendar to see what's coming up and prepare.

The complete meeting minutes for the Board meetings are published in the monthly newsletters, so that the membership can keep up with what their Board is doing on their behalf.

And that should give you and idea of what the Board is doing, month after month, to keep things running smoothly, and to keep you paddling on the water.

Thank you for your support!
