Club Picnic
September 14 2019
by John Rich
The Houston Canoe Club will hold its annual picnic and paddle on September 14th. This will take place at Brooks Lake in Sugar Land, starting at 4:30 pm, at the Courtyard by Marriott Houston Sugar Land/Lake Point hotel.
Brooks Lake is in the north quadrant of the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 59. The lake wraps around a large office complex, home to Fluor oil and gas construction company, and several hotels, among other tenants. See the maps, below.
Food will be pot-luck style. The club will provide entrees (flat breads and chicken enchiladas), and cold soft drinks. We ask that everyone bring a side dish or dessert to share. Dinner will be served at 6:00. The hotel has a liquor license, so if you need a drink you can go inside and enjoy one there.
We will be outside, so bring lawn chairs, camp tables, shades, a cooler, hat, sun lotion and anything else you might need to enjoy the outdoor environment. Bathrooms will be available in the Marriott Hotel. We're paying them to provide us with tables, entrees, and cold drinks, so they won't complain about us going inside to use their bathrooms. But be courteous and don't track mud through the lobby. There are rows of trees along the waterline, so natural shade will be available.
And bring your boat! There is an easy put-in from the shallow grassy bank. We can take turns trying out each other's boats to see what we like.
Sept. 14th will be near the full moon, and Brooks Lake is a nice sheltered location to enjoy a moonlight paddle.
Address: Marriott Hotel, 16740 Creek Bend Dr., Sugar Land, Texas 77478
