Safety Minute - Skin Cancer
July 2019

skin cancer

Ah! The fresh outdoors! Clean air!  Cool water! Warm Sun!
The life-giving, warm, welcoming Sun! Your body needs it to make Vitamin D!

Um. It also causes skin cancer.

We know this. We also know it is beneficial and feels so good when we are outdoors. But it has its hazards.

Many of my friends have annual visits with a dermatologist to scan for skin cancer. Usually because they’ve already had to have a growth removed.

I, myself, finally went in to have what I thought was a mole looked at. Nope, they did a biopsy, and determined it was Basal Cell Carcinoma. They had to remove a lot of skin because I had waited and let it grow so long.

So, from now on, long sleeved shirts. Wide brimmed hats. Sun screen of at least 30 SPF or more, reapplied a couple of times each day. I’m thinking of getting Sun Gloves.

I want to be able to enjoy the Sun for a long time to come. Which means I have to protect myself from its worst hazards. And get checked for skin cancer twice a year.

If you haven’t yet, make an appointment with a dermatologist to get yourself checked. And wear long sleeved shirts, wide brimmed hats, and sunscreen more often. Maybe think about Sun Gloves.
