Kent Walters has been an active member of the Houston Canoe Club for 5 years. He has lead many fabulous trips for the club from the Rio Grande in Big Bend to the Buffalo River in Arkansas. He currently holds the position of Purser as well.
Kent grew up in Southern California. He has been a camper, water-skier, canoeist, backpacker, lead guitarist and lead singer in a rock band, missionary, teacher, husband, father to four, technical writer/copy editor, computer operator and engineer at Hughes Aircraft, scoutmaster, rock climber and mountain climber (Sierras/Yosemite), and wilderness cross-country skier/snowshoer/snow camper. As a hard drive engineer in the Silicon Valley following his first career at Hughes, he worked for seven different companies in many countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Scotland, Belgium, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Hungary. He moved to Houston in 1998 with IBM to support Compaq/HP; he is still a hard drive engineer at his latest employer, Toshiba, still supporting HP. Several years ago for his 60th birthday, and consistent with his penchant for adventure, Kent got certified in paragliding. Kent is grandfather to 13 grandchildren. He currently claims only one adventure hobby: kayaking.
For his presentation, "The Buffalo National River in Arkansas and The Trip Coordination Principles That Make It Work," Kent will blend the excitement of a multi-day trip with some of the mechanics, considerations and preparation that go into coordinating such an experience. He will share his secret resources and recipe for covering the bases. Highlights will include photos and videos from a few trips to the spectacular Buffalo National River in Arkansas, one of the truly beautiful kayaking / canoeing rivers within striking distance of Houston.
