Tom & Paula Goynes |
Tom Goynes was born in 1950 in Houston Texas. He graduated from St. Thomas High School and spent 3 years at U of H before escaping from the big city and moving to San Marcos. He eventually received a BA (political science) from UT. He has taken some post graduate courses at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) and Dallas Theological Seminary.
While attending St. Thomas (in 1967) he entered his first Texas Water Safari during which he fell in love with the San Marcos River. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Houston Canoe Club, where he learned "all the things he had done wrong in his first Safari." Fred and Marie Hurd took him under their wings and pretty much adopted him as their other canoe son.
He and his wife Paula have owned and/or operated campgrounds on the San Marcos River since moving there in 1972. They currently own the San Marcos River Retreat, which they will be happy to sell to the first non-tuber who comes along. He has served as president of the Texas Rivers Protection Association (TRPA) since its inception in the late 1980’s.
During his talk at the HCC meeting, he intends to solve all the flooding problems (Harvey, etc.) tuber problems, and sewage problems in Texas and beyond.
