Vice Commodore Introduction
January 2018
by Alice Nissen
I am honored to be asked to serve as Vice Commodore. I am relatively new to Houston and Texas and joined the club about five years ago in order to meet people who liked paddling as much as I do and also to have someone to paddle with who knew the area. I have had some beautiful trips with the club and have met many new friends. I have also enjoyed the meeting presentations and going to Jax after the meeting for a beer and conversation with fellow paddlers. I had been thinking recently that it was time to pay back. I have seen the same people doing all the work to keep the club going, and I felt it was time I chipped in and helped too, so I was very glad to be asked.
I moved from Missouri where I have paddled in a canoe many of the rivers in the state. I also lived next to the Big River, which is a beautiful river. I paddled that on a kayak at least once or twice a week. As much as I miss paddling the Big River, this area, although very different, is equally beautiful and nothing compares to the birds I have seen in this area.
I look forward to my new position with HCC and am grateful for any suggestions for meeting topics and presenters and hope to hear from some of you regarding this.
