Last Meeting Minutes
by Frank Ohrt

Houston Canoe Club
General Membership Meeting
Sept. 13, 2017
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt

The Vice Commodore called the meeting to order, and introduced the officers. Present were Recorder Frank Ohrt, Vice Commodore Ann Derby, Purser Kent Walters, Newsletter Editor John Rich, Boatswain Paul Woodcock, Fleet Captain Natalie Wiest, and Webmaster Harmon Everett. Commodore Honey Leveen was absent. Ms. Derby then noted the pre-meeting dinner at Jax’s, and added that some members also met there after the meetings.

The Boatswain gave the membership report. There was one new member, Herb Craft, and 10 renewing members, for a total of 149. He thanked Mr. Rich for making it easier to renew membership online. Everyone clapped.

The Vice Commodore noted that the last meeting’s minutes had been submitted by Mr. Ohrt, who moved that they be accepted as written. They were.

The Purser reported that the club was within $50.00 of it’s budget for the year, thanks to a losing streak at a “five line” parlor.

Ms. Derby noted the Houston Audubon Society’s meeting on Sept. 14th, with Jim Blackburn speaking on global warming. Mr. Ohrt mentioned the PACK meeting on the 19th, with a talk on water quality in Galveston Bay.

For the Safety Minute, the Vice Commodore called attention to the dangerous levels of bacteria and pollutants in area waterways, due to floodwater runoff.

The Fleet Captain thanked Christy Long for filling in as Fleet Captain, and for leading two trips on the San Marcos. Christy transferred credit for one trip to Tracy Becker. Mr. Everett talked about a "Harvey rescue" he was involved with. David Portz and Tom Douglas spoke about the conditions along the bayou at Allen’s Landing. Ms. Wiest reported a club total of 1,947 miles this year, and that Mr. Walters has paddled 131. Mr. Walters announced a trip on White’s Bayou on Sept. 16. Mr. Douglas announced an ACA level II river kayaking class the same day, in the Woodlands. Ms. Wiest noted that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was holding "sunset" paddles" from Galveston Island State Park.

The Vice Commodore asked all visitors to introduce themselves, which they did.

Ms Long announced the work of the Officers Nominating Committee. Tom Douglas asked for a volunteer Level II kayak or canoe instructor for the Bayou Preservation Association.

The Vice Commodore then introduced the evening’s speaker, Bruce Asher of HASK, who gave a presentation about his recent sea kayaking trip to Scotland. Scotland is pretty, but not real big on trees.

The Vice Commodore adjourned the meeting.

Houston Canoe Club
Board Meeting
Sept, 6, 2017
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt
The meeting was called to order. Present were Commodore Honey Leveen, Vice Commodore Ann Derby, Newsletter Editor John Rich, Boatswain Paul Woodcock, Fleet Captain Natalie Wiest, and Recorder Frank Ohrt. Purser Kent Walters joined by telephone.

Ms. Wiest reported two club trips, both led by Christy Long. She noted that several members had paddled over 100 miles so far this year. Ms. Derby suggested that since the Fleet Captain’s report at the Membership Meeting would be brief, we might solicit members’ “war stories” from Hurricane Harvey. Mr. Woodcock said that he would begin leading a monthly trip for beginners on one of the Texas Paddle Trails.

Mr. Walters reported that the club is slightly ahead of its projected budget for the year. Mr. Ohrt asked for clarification of some issues concerning club mail.

Mr. Woodcock announced one new member, and 10 renewing members.

The officers discussed the “Join” button on the website.

Ms. Derby listed the speakers for the next several meetings. This month’s speaker will be Bruce Asher, talking about paddling in Scotland. October’s speaker will be Linda Day, on the state of the San Marcos River, and November’s will be Kent Walters, on paddling Big Bend or the Buffalo River (AR).

Mr. Ohrt said he would give the Safety Minute at the Membership Meeting, on the dangers of polluted post-Harvey floodwater.

Ms. Leveen discussed the nominating committee for next year’s officers. The members are Christy Long, Harmon Everett, Kent Walters, and Amy McGee. Mr. Ohrt suggested soliciting nominations from the membership.

Ms. Leveen announced that she would be absent for the September Membership Meeting, and that Ms. Derby would preside.

Mr. Walters said that we need to schedule more club trips, and various possibilities were discussed.

    The meeting was adjourned.
