Vice-commodore Ann Derby, serving as Commodore, called the meeting to order. She introduced the officers present: Purser Kent Walters, Recorder Frank Ohrt, Conservation Chair John Bartos, and Christy Long and Terry Herdlicka, acting as Fleet Captain and Boatswain, respectively. Dave Kitson mentioned the pre-meeting dinner at Brisket Barbecue, and Ann mentioned the post-meeting gathering at Jax’s.
Terry gave the Boatswain’s report. there was one guest, <name forthcoming>, a previous member, who asked for people to join him for evening paddles in the Kingwood area. There was one new member, Don Harbour.
Kent gave the Purser’s report. The club was a bit behind on its budget, but there were several membership checks that he had not received yet, as the Recorder forgot to bring the mail.
John Bartos brought up two conservation issues, the “Ike Dike” in Galveston Bay, and the border wall, that were worthy of the members’ attention. Frank Ohrt noted the pre-migration mega-flock of purple martins at North Gessner and Tomball Parkway.
Frank gave the Safety minute, reminding members to consider water temperature, not just air temperature, when dressing for a paddle. He then repeated the admonition, when attempting a rescue, never to turn a drowning into a double drowning. He then summarized the American Whitewater statistics on recent paddling fatalities, and emphasized avoidance of strainers, the wearing of pfd's, and staying healthy and fit.
Christy gave the Fleet Captain’s report. Tracy Becker led a paddle on the San Marcos on July 15th, and Dave Risch and Sandy Rushworth reported on their recent kayaking trip in the mangroves of Costa Rica. Future trips mentioned included a trip on the San Marcos on August 12th, led by Christy, and the Neches River Rally on Sept. 9th, coordinated through Fran Wilcox. There was a reminder of the wild and Scenic Film Festival at the Star Cinema Grill on August 17th.
The total mileage for the membership was 1,914 miles, on 19 trips.
Ann then adjourned the meeting, and opened the floor to the club “swap meet”, wherein several members did their best to unload their excess gear.
