Scouting Report: Colorado River Campsite
December, 2016
by Natalie Wiest
I revisited a park I’d scouted some time ago on the Colorado River, this time with more time to really check it out. Park Ranger Robert Carlisle was on duty at the desk when I got there. He is very friendly and enthusiastic about this nice park. This is Riverside Park, a park owned and managed by the City of Bay City.
It sits right on the Colorado River, with a nice paved boat ramp for ready access to the water, and many shaded campsites, both with and without hookups, i.e., a great spot for tent camping. There are 40 spaces for the RV crowd, and about the same number with water and electricity for tent campers.
From this putin, you can paddle 12 miles downstream to River Park where highway 521 crosses the Colorado; or you can paddle upstream and back for about a 5 mile round trip to a dam.
Its website is: www.cityofbaycity.org/departments/parks-recreation/riverside-park. You can make reservations up to 90 days in advance by calling 979-245-0340 during normal business hours. The website describes the park:
On the bank of the Colorado River, this park features 40 campsites with full-service RV hookups. Other facilities include a jogging trail with a 10-station exercise course along the way, boat ramp, day pavilion, and several spots perfect for fishing. Adjacent to the park is Rio Colorado Golf Course, a beautiful 18-hole, Gary Player-designed course. From Bay City, take Texas 60 south; turn right on F.M. 2668, and the park is two miles west on the right. For park information, call 979/245-0340; for golf information, call 979/244-2955.
