"Natural Garden on Buffalo Bayou Mowed Down" (Houston, TX)
"We received some upsetting news Sunday, Sept. 25. The lovely garden planted by Buffalo Bayou on the banks of the outfall/boat launch in Memorial Park at Woodway had been completely mowed down.  Geologist Bill Heins sent us photographs, and the scene was ugly. We’ve been following the evolution of this little patch of paradise in the middle of the city for the past two years. We wondered about the wisdom of cutting these native plants on the eroding steep bank..."

"Drilling to begin to test soil beneath hog farm manure ponds" (Mount Judea, AR)
"Drilling is set to begin this week at a hog farm to test the soil beneath manure ponds. The farm, which is allowed to have up to more than 2,500 sows and 4,000 piglets, sits on Big Creek, about 7 miles from where it flows into the Buffalo National River. Nearby residents and environmental groups have criticized the farm over fears of pollution from hog waste..."

"Father and son build memories" (Pekin, IL)
"A handcrafted canoe may have been what saved David Hupke's life.  Hupke, 53, was heavily involved in Boy Scouts as a youth. In the early '80s he was a wilderness instructor in Minnesota. While there, a wooden canoe caught his attention. It was one that he wanted to build with his dad, Horst Hupke, someday.  "He came home and said, 'Dad, we have to build one,'" Horst said.  Life got in the way and plans to build the canoe were delayed for decades. Then David got gravely ill..."

"EPA calls for removal of toxic waste in the San Jacinto River" (Houston, TX)
"Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially called for removal of the deadly dioxin-contaminated wastes at the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site in Channelview, Harris County, Texas. Galveston Bay Foundation believes the decision to remove the wastes now, rather than to try to contain the toxins in place in a vulnerable location on a tidal river subject to hurricanes, floods and barge strikes with an armored rock cap, is the correct and only solution..."
