San Marcos River Clean-Up
Mar. 5, 2016

The San Marcos River Clean-up for 2016 took place March 5th. HCC once again had an admirable turnout for it’s traditional section of the river, from Tom Goynes’ San Marcos River Retreat to Scull’s Crossing. There were fifteen participants, including three non-members who showed up, pitched in, and got tired and muddy anyway. Good for them! I tried to guilt-trip them into joining HCC, but, not having children, I was out of practice.
The great floods of last year had a huge effect on the river. Big trees were down, all the rapids were pretty well cleared out, and there were great piles of tree debris everywhere. There were few beer cans and plastic bottles, but lots of twisted metal, chunks of wood and iron, and enough of what had once been domestic possessions to keep everyone in a somber mood. There were even several trailers, 20 feet long or more, that, other than being upside down and stuck in trees, were in excellent condition!

Everyone had to work extra hard, the ground was rough, and we were all worn out by the time we got to Scull’s. Someone, who shall go un-named, discovered that a tire, after being heaved up on to the bank, could right itself, turn 180°, and slowly roll down the bank and right back into his canoe. There was much sympathy expressed, mostly by people falling down laughing. Tom’s place, however, had hot water up and running, and a fine dinner was provided by the San Marcos River Foundation. All in all, it was a good day.
