The Commodore called the meeting to order, then introduced the officers present. He noted that Terri Morgan, the Fleet Captain, would not be able to carry out her duties after September 1, as she was returning to school. She is taking another run at being a kid, and hopes it will be easier this time. Good luck, Terri! Jessica Kuhn was introduced as the new Webmaster.

For the Safety Minute, the Commodore discussed the dangers of foot entrapment, and reminded the members that you should never stand up in fast water.

The Commodore announced that almost all club offices would become vacant at the end of the year, and asked the members to consider serving. Come on, y'all. The best way to kill a club is to sit on your bum and hope someone else does all the work!

The Boatswain announced several new members: Ashley Dunham, Wayne Hutchinson, Susan Butler, and Amy Samaripa. Visitors included Craig Walker, Doug Marshall, Roger Hathorn, Norma and David Schutt, and Nicholas Ragan.

The Fleet Captain reported on recent club trips, including the "Fireworks on the Bay" paddle in Kemah, and Paul Woodcock talked about the Neches River Wilderness Canoe Race in Palestine. Joe Coker reported on his recent paddle on Clear Creek, and Will Blumentritt reported a trip on Burnett Bay. Philip and Tisha Matticks announced a three-day paddle on the Sabine River over the Labor Day weekend. Bruce Bodson announced the La Grange Canoe Classic on August 22. Tom Douglas announced the Cypress Creek Regatta on September 19, with a river clean-up the weekend before (Sept. 12).

John Bartos, the Conservation Chair, and Natalie Weist, spoke about efforts to create a paddling-based National Recreation Area on the upper Texas coast. Tom Douglas reported the release of the Galveston Bay Foundation's report on the health of Galveston Bay. Mr. Bartos requested that members ask mayoral candidates about their views on water conservation.
