Blast from the Past
1980-1981
by John Rich
Ladies & Gentlemen:
I have obtained a box of old HCC newsletters and other documents dating from 1980 through 2004. There are many gems of HCC history contained therein! I will endeavor to scan these into digital form, and I intend to feature several of these historic documents each month in the newsletter. They will also be added to the newsletter index page, to group them in the same place with other monthly club newsletters.
This is likely to be a long term project. There are 24 years of newsletters, and at 12 issues per year, that's a total of 288 issues. That's a lot of scanning and photo editing... But I'll keep plugging away at it each month, and get 'er done eventually.
Your first featured treasure trove treats are some HCC newsletters from the 1980's. In those days before personal computers, word processing programs and the internet, the newsletter was hand-typed, reproduced on copying machines, envelopes stuffed, stamps licked, and then sent to members by U.S. mail. Postage was just 15¢, and annual dues were $9.
Even though these issues are over 30 years old, you are likely to see some familiar names of people that are still club members today! The copies are often ragged, yellowed, and contain misspellings and coffee stains, but are marvelous! You'll see the introduction of new young member named Louis Aulbach, how the club used to have loaner canoes and a club canoe trailer, discussion of baby-sitter exchanges to free parents for a day of paddling, mention of the Buffalo Bayou "Reeking Regatta", trip reports on water that we don't paddle today for some reason, legal trouble on the Blanco River, and other topics of interest.
