"Threats To The Gila River And To Public Stream Access" (New Mexico)
"March was a busy month for AW as we worked to derail two very troubling bills in the New Mexico legislature... First, the legislation: The bills were a reaction to a recent NM Attorney General opinion that suggested most riverbed and riverbanks between low and high water marks are open to public use. But the bills went way overboard in trying to keep anglers off private land... Now about that wild and beautiful Gila: A truly misguided proposal would siphon the last free-flowing New Mexican river and in the process destroy some of the most precious, beautiful and fun river habitat in the entire Southwest..."

"Paralysed kayaker to represent Australia at canoe world champs"
(Sydney, Australia)
"Sam Bloom fell and broke her spine when she leaned against a loose balcony railing in 2013.  Ms Bloom was exceptionally fit before her accident, and took up kayaking to combat the depressing reality of being unable to participate in any of the other sports she loved: surfing, running, and cycling.  She joined a kayak club, where she was lifted into a kayak and strapped against a special backrest..."

"Run a River, on Two Feet" (Glenwood Springs, CO)
"The river picked up speed, sucking me into the churn. I pulled my paddle hard through the water and braced myself. This was only Class II whitewater, but my heart was pounding at a Class V rate. That's because I wasn't in a raft, or even a kayak — I was balancing on a standup paddleboard. Whitewater SUP got its start when professional kayakers took a cue from surfers and started experimenting with standup boards..."

The trip will cover more than 5,000km through rivers and lakes, including portaging..."

"Low-lying dams drown hundreds of unsuspecting victims"
 (Des Moines, IA)
"For the better part of a century, submerged dams were workhorses of the American heartland, harnessing the power of rivers to run grain mills, generate electricity and keep lakes and ponds full of water as a hedge against drought. These walls of concrete, called low-head dams for their minimal profile, outlasted their original purpose long ago. But beneath the seemingly gentle cascades and quiet rumble, the dams hide a sinister secret: They have dragged hundreds of unsuspecting swimmers and boaters into their churning waters and drowned them..."

"Texas is likely to receive as much as $65 million to build nesting islands for brown pelicans, gulls and other birds and to protect critically endangered sea turtles as part of a larger campaign to restore the Gulf of Mexico, officials said Monday. The money is part of the latest round of funding for restoration projects after the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.  Under the plan, Texas would receive $20 million to build three islands in Galveston Bay and one in Matagorda Bay from dredge spoil to increase nesting habitat for colonial waterbirds..."
