"Galveston Island preserve takes shape" (Galveston, TX)
"A few years ago, wetlands that provided a home for coastal wildlife faced destruction to make way for a marina. Now an environmental group has carved out a preserve on Galveston Island that could eventually offer hiking and kayak trails.  After more than six years of effort, Artist Boat has secured a grant that will allow it to purchase the final piece of a 367-acre section..."

"Canoers find body in Buffalo Bayou" (Houston, TX)
"An autopsy is slated for Monday for the body of a man found by canoers paddling in Buffalo Bayou Sunday.  The body, found caught on some debris in a relatively undeveloped stretch of the bayou in the 4400 block of Memorial Drive, was removed from the water by Houston firefighters..."

"Mail thief tries to escape on kayak" (Sammamish, WA)
"A suspected mail thief chose a bizarre getaway vehicle and got caught in the middle of Lake Sammamish. Now he and a woman are in the King County Jail. "I just thought it was a kayak theft, a kayak hijacking,” explained Brian Conway, standing on the edge of their Lake Sammamish dock. Little did he know that the man who hijacked their kayak was wanted for mail theft, and what the pair described as a low-speed pursuit to the middle of Lake Sammamish..."

"Two drown in canoe mishap" (Franklin, NC)
"A man and boy drowned after falling into the lake from a capsized canoe, Wildlife Resources Commission spokesman Geoff Cantrell said. The incident happened Friday at the remote lake in Macon County. The two victims were among four people in the canoe when it overturned.  Two people survived. No one in the canoe was wearing a life jacket..."

"Pair plans to row across Atlantic to fund boathouse on Buffalo Bayou" (Houston, TX)
"Members of the Rice University rowing team hit the water of Buffalo Bayou as early as 5:30 a.m.  In September, they built a dock on North York. Using shipping containers and welding equipment, they also erected a crude - and cheap - storage shed for their boats, oars and other equipment. To help raise funds, Matson, 30, and Alviar, 29, hope to participate in the 2015 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge - a 2,700 mile rowboat race across the Atlantic Ocean..."
