50th Anniversary Origins
November 2014
by Paul Carr
Although the Houston Canoe Club has just celebrated the 50th birthday of its creation in 1964, the seeds of its creation date back to at least 1928.
The accompanying photograph is of the father and uncle of Fred Hurd, the founder of the club. The picture was taken in about 1928 in front of a house that was located at 711 E. 9th St. in the Houston Heights. The passenger on the motorcycle was Fred Hurd's father and the driver of the motorcycle and owner of the canoe was Fred's uncle.
