"Winning A&M students create concrete canoe"  (College Station, TX)
"When it comes to building a concrete canoe, you might think the main question is: Will it float?  But a team of civil engineering students from Texas A&M university, which has just won a regional competition, is learning that a bigger challenge is how maneuverable to make it, said their faculty advisor, Dan Zollinger.  "What's tricky is, you can make a canoe to run straight or make it to be maneuverable," he said. In early April, when flows rose to perfect levels at Desoto Falls, McMillan set out with a strong safety crew, determined to break the OC1 waterfall record. “Right after I got in my boat I cleared my mind, dropped into the water, and instinct kind of kicked in,” he said..."

"Maine canoe builders race against the clock for Ralph Lauren"
(Freeport, ME)
"On Tuesday at noon — not a minute earlier or later — famed fashion designer Ralph Lauren will walk through his Madison Avenue showroom to examine a trio of canoes. Why should we care about such a high falutin' thing? The canoes, brightly colored instead of drab green, are being built by a former Auburn man and his tiny crew in Freeport. Over the past 17 years, Texas has averaged 45 boating-related fatalities annually. This past year, Texas saw 33 boating-related fatalities, placing it third among the 50 states..."
