Houston Canoe Club 50th Anniversary
by Harmon Everett
At the February HCC meeting, Fleet Captain Dave Kitson told of realizing that next year is the 50th anniversary for the Houston Canoe Club. Well, so it is.
There have been some informal suggestions that we should do something about it. In the past, for the 30th, or 40th anniversaries, there have been special weekend campouts, and special Newsletter editions.
If anybody is interested in working on something like that for the 50th anniversary next year, I’m interested in getting volunteers.
I’m also interested in putting together a timeline with important historical events. I have heard that members of HCC have played an important part in the Buffalo Bayou Regatta, and the local waterway cleanups. I suspect HCC has been involved in other water activities over the years, too, that should probably be recorded officially somewhere. Also, I’ve heard a lot about the Southwest Rendezvous, and would like a good history of that.
If anyone has photos or film, movies or videos of early important trips and events, I would like to see if we could copy them and use some for whatever document we put together to commemorate this special anniversary. If you have any documents you could provide, or want to work on a 50th anniversary commemoration, please send me a note! Thanks!
