An Update on the Buffalo Bayou Waterway Closure
at Capitol Avenue Bridge
by Linda Gorski
In case you’re wondering whether you can paddle Buffalo Bayou from Woodway down to Allen’s Landing right now, the answer is you cannot. The Bayou is blocked at the Capitol Street Bridge for work being done on the Metrorail expansion project as a new light-rail bridge is constructed for the Southeast (Purple) line.
The Buffalo Bayou waterway closed on March 19 and was scheduled to reopen at the end of May. However, Louis Aulbach and I were on Buffalo Bayou on Saturday, September 8, and shot these photos of work still being done under the Capitol Avenue Bridge at Rusk.
The waterway remains open to paddlers (non-motorized boats) on either side of Capitol and Rusk, but no through-traffic is permitted. Paddlers upstream from Capitol must debark at Sabine and may re-enter near Allen’s Landing (Commerce and Main).
Also, here is a photo of our favorite put in at Allen’s Landing. When this photo was taken on September 8 sand and silt that had been scraped from the hike and bike path after the last big rain had been piled up, blocking the put-in. Hopefully this obstacle will be removed before our next canoe trip.
