HOUSTON CANOE CLUB GENERAL MEETING
May 9th, 2012
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: John Berlinghoff

The meeting was called to order by Vice Commodore Joe Coker.  He introduced our speaker Dr. Curtis Hightower with his wife Monica.  A number of visitors were introduced: Steve Page was a visitor.  Dwight was a new member who found us from our web site.  Michelle Jackson was also a visitor.  Another visitor was Ken and his wife Tracey.  Clark and Nancy are members but this was their first meeting in a while.  Cliff was a visitor and this was his second meeting.

Trip Reports:
• Tim did the Dragon Boat Regatta at Buffalo Bayou this last weekend with Keith Williams as
  drummer.
• Joe did the Buffalo River in Arkansas along with Ken McDowell and Ken Anderson.
• Joe and Dave Kitson did Pickett's Bayou but had to turn back due to a log across the bayou.
• Joe and Tom Douglas did Mud Lake/Lake Charlotte - a combined HCC and HSC (Houston Sierra
Club) Trip.  They used the I-10 access point.
• Phil & Tish Matticks did Oyster Creek.
• Tom Douglas led a combined HCC/HSC trip on Cypress Creek.

Planned Trips:
• Joe's belated Spring Fling will be June 9 on Lake Charlotte to Mac Bayou.
• Fraser will be doing the Columbus loop (Colorado River) on Memorial Day - an easy trip that
almost comes back to the start point.
• Phil & Tish Matticks will do an easy paddle on the Sabine over Memorial Day, with camping.

Website Business
The business page links for vendors was discussed at the board meeting.  There will be monthly reviews of requested additions including a disclaimer about using them.  There will be notices put on the Forum: Greg Walker is working on enhancements to make it easier for trip posting.

IRS
We, along with 125,000 other non profits, received a lengthy form to fill out.  There needs to be an amendment to our Bylaws stating what will happen to club funds if the HCC is dissolved.  This will be formally published and voted on by the membership.

Speaker

Dr. Curtis Hightower
  ...and his broken paddle
Our speaker, Dr. Curtis Hightower gave a presentation on his expedition trip on the Missouri River, from Omaha, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri.  He started out once but abandoned the trip because of ice floes on the river, and then returned later to complete the 9-day trip.

Submitted,
John Berlinghoff
