"If we had known how dangerous these rapids were, we wouldn’t have taken them on," says South African expedition leader Steve Fisher. Working with Americans Rush Sturges and Tyler Bradt and Canadian Benny Marr, Fisher spent four days in western Congo last October running the Congo River’s Inga Rapids, the world’s largest by volume. “It was easily the closest I’ve ever come to dying,” Fisher says. With whirlpools 40 feet across, 20-foot waves, and boils 15 feet high, this 50-mile stretch of rapids rages at 1.6 million cubic feet per second... Fisher says he’s proud but humbled by the accomplishment. “We didn’t conquer the rapids. We survived them.”

"A pair of New Jersey men said they have found a way to beat the traffic and tolls of their daily commute to New York -- traveling via kayak. Zach Schwitzky and Erik David Barber said the daily commutes to their Manhattan office in their kayaks have saved them money on gas and tolls and increased their amount of daily exercise. "We wanted to do something that was a little more eco-friendly and we said, you know what? We love the outdoors. We love to kayak. Why is it out of the question to kayak to work? "Jeff Ryan got the shock of his life. “I didn’t have time to react,” said the 37-year-old Waterloo man on Monday, two days after canoeing into an electric fence line hung across the Nith River. “Once we turned that corner, we came onto that fence quite quickly.” Ryan was enjoying a Saturday afternoon excursion with his fiancée Stefanie when they paddled unexpectedly into two yellow lines hung above the water. One line was about two feet over the surface. The other was two feet above that. “As soon as it hit me, the canoe flipped over and I went under the fence to try and stay clear of it and get on the other side,” Ryan said..."
