Double Bayou

On Saturday morning, our group met up at Double Bayou Park, several miles south of Anahuac.  After exploring a small tributary that leads to the north toward the historic St. Paul Church and Godfrey Cemetery, we continued southwest down the tree-lined bayou.  Goldenrod was in full bloom, as caught in the accompanying photo by Alan Bernstein.  Once we began looking for it, we also spotted prickly pear growing along the bank at three different spots.  Great blue herons, great egrets, belted kingfishers, and other birds added to our enjoyment.  As we drew closer to Trinity Bay, small crabs scampered up the banks.  Several docked work boats and a long row of white marker floats reminded us that shrimping and crabbing are important parts of the local economy.  Even with a leisurely lunch stop near a beautiful grove of oaks, we still reached our take-out point at Job Beason Park more quickly than usual, thanks to the outgoing tide and a breeze at our backs.  Following the paddle, a shrimp dinner at a local watering hole on the banks of the bayou provided a fun finish for the day’s activities.
