What is this?
1) Various club reports
2) Guest Speaker: Tom Goynes, San Marcos River Clean Up, TRPA and efforts to protecting texas rivers
In Nov 1972, Tom Goynes started the first San Marcos River Clean Up. It has been held every year since. It is now a coordinated annual effort among the City of San Marcos, TRPA (Texas Rivers Protection Association) as well as some businesses and a lot of paddling enthusiasts, covering most of the 60-mile stretch of the river. The name of the event has also gotten an upgrade -- it is now called The San Marcos River Clean Up and Rendezvous. The day of the event, March 2, 2024, is fast approaching. We decided to invite Tom Goynes himself, who started this event and led the TRPA from 1989-2020 on a long journey, from the failed efforts trying to lobby the Texas legislature to adopt a river protection system to unrelenting continuing efforts to work directly to protect Texas rivers from wastewaters, from over pumping and from other abusive activities. Tom's got stories!
Tom was born and raised in Houston. To Houston Canoe Club, Tom Goynes is no stranger, either! He joined the club in 1967 and has served as Fleet Captain. Of course, Tom is a life long canoe enthusiast. He entered his first Texas Water Safari when he was only 16! He built his businesses as well as his career around the sport he enjoys. I am sure a lot of us will find his story intriguing and inspirational, especially those who love and enjoy Texas waters and are determined to protect them.
