The health and productivity of Texas’ bays and estuaries depend critically on the mixing of freshwater and saltwater that happens there. Dr. Paul Montagna will describe how his research has revealed the ways in which many kinds of marine organisms respond to the fresh water, sediments, and nutrients that flow into our bays.

Dr. Montagna, who holds an Endowed Chair for HydroEcology at the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi’s Harte Research Institute, was a member of the committee that guided development of environmental flow standards for all Texas rivers and bays, and he advised the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration regarding the damages caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He is also an author and editor of the recently updated book Freshwater Inflows to Texas Bays and Estuaries: A Regional-Scale Review, Synthesis, and Recommendations (Springer Nature, 2025).
