Alligator Snapping Turtles Webinar – Wednesday, Ma...
Tom

What: Webinar on “Demography of Alligator Snapping Turtles Along a Fishing Pressure Gradient”

When: Wednesday May 21 at 12:00 PM

Where: Virtual

Register: HERE

Populations of the Alligator Snapping Turtle, which is the largest freshwater turtle species in North America, have declined significantly. Due to this species’ large size and feeding behavior, it is susceptible to being caught on “passive” fishing gear such as trotlines or jug lines, and to being injured after swallowing fish hooks. Luke Micek, a Graduate Researcher at the Stephen F. Austin State University, Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, will describe how passive acoustic telemetry, a novel monitoring approach for monitoring freshwater turtle populations, is being used to study the Alligator Snapping Turtle. The results of these studies will be important for developing strategies for the turtle’s management and recovery.
