Wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more. Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, and we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests.
Established in 2021 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on February 2. Individuals and organizations are invited to:
• Make conscious choices to stop polluting wetlands;
• Join the global effort to conserve and sustainably manage wetlands; and
• Take part in wetland restoration efforts locally.
