An article by Dalton Sweat in the June 23 issue of the San Marcos Daily Record reported that the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment has received a $500,000 federal grant to address water quality issues at Texas beaches. Data collected in 2022 showed that more than 90% of Texas beaches had unsafe water quality issues on at least one day, and that one of them had unsafe water quality conditions on more than half of the days tested.
Robert Mace, Executive Director of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University, pointed out that climate change is exacerbating issues of microbial contamination, and that citizen science can play an important role in gathering relevant data. The project to be funded by the grant will apply new and emerging technology, and will focus on historically contaminated beaches in Harris, Matagorda and Nueces counties.
