The Texas General Land Office’s online webinar: “Clean Coast Texas Lunch & Learn: Exploring the relationship between beach quality and tourist economic activity in Galveston, Texas" that was originally scheduled for Thursday May 16 has been rescheduled for 11:00 AM on Thursday July 18.
Research has shown that changes in land use can adversely impact the environmental quality of beaches and public health. On the other hand, economic activity such as beachfront development and tourism relies on clean beaches and healthy coastal ecosystems. Only recently have studies explored the intertwined connection between environmental quality and tourist economic activity.
Virgie Greb, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Marine Sciences at Texas A&M University at Galveston, is using a systems approach to study these relationships in Galveston, TX. She is currently developing a BEACH Report Card, which will provide an evidence base to guide state and local decisions that will promote sustainable economic activities along our coast.
