The Champion Lake Day Use Area, where HCC members have often paddled, is a unit of the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. Activities by Refuge personnel to develop and improve visitor programs and public use facilities at Champion Lake receive invaluable support from the local nonprofit organization, Friends of Trinity River Refuge.
“Walk for the Wild”, which is sponsored nationally by the Public Lands Alliance and locally by Friends of Trinity River Refuge, is the local kickoff event for the 2023 National Wildlife Refuge Week, observed on October 7-14. The purpose of “Walk for the Wild” is to encourage people to move in nature and raise support for nonprofit organizations to support the National Wildlife Refuge System. Opportunities for participants will include a 5K hike, a short paddle, a Pollinator Garden, informational tables, and a chance to look around the Champion Lake Day Use Area. Plans are also underway for an HCC-sponsored paddling outing.
A map and driving directions are posted here. (Please observe the speed limits on County Road 417, which leads into the refuge.)
Registration is free, and registrants will be offered an opportunity to contribute to “Walk for the Wild”. The online “Walk for the Wild” registration site will open on September 1. Be sure to watch the HCC Conservation Forum for updates.
