Last Meeting Minutes
by Frank Ohrt

Houston Canoe Club
General Membership Meeting
April 10, 2019
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt

  Bob Naeger
  Commodore Bob Naeger called the meeting to order, and introduced the officers present: Vice Commodore Dan Roy, Newsletter Editor John Rich, Purser Kent Walters, Fleet Captain Natalie Wiest, Boatswain Paul Woodcock, and Recorder Frank Ohrt. Also present were Webmaster Harmon Everett, Sergeant-at-Arms Ann Derby, and Conservation Chair Brucie Bodson.

  Mr. Naeger noted the pre-meeting dinner at Thai Cottage and the post-meeting dining at Jax’s.

  Mr. Woodcock gave the Safety Minute. He admonished members who take antibiotics to be aware of their side effects, such as dehydration and sun sensitivity. There may be others, so read the drug information notes.

  Mr. Naeger asked that the last meeting’s minutes be approved as written. They were.

  Natalie Wiest
Ms. Wiest gave the Fleet Captain’s report. Recent trips and leaders were:

March 16: Colorado River, Bruce Bodson;
March 23: Colorado River, Bruce Bodson;
March 30: Dickenson Bayou (Trash Bash), Christy Long;
March 31: Brazos River, Bruce Bodson.

  Tom Douglas mentioned HCC’s participation in the Bayou Greenways Project day at Mason Park on April 6th. Mr. Ohrt suggested possibly joining the Trash Bash clean-up at Kuhlman Gully next year. Linda Shead noted it was officially designated as one of the three trashiest waterways in Houston.

  Upcoming trips announced were:

April 13: Neches River NWR grand opening, Cherokee County, TX;
April 13-14: ACK Demo Days, Spring, TX;
April 14: Earth Day Houston, Discovery Green, Houston;
April 25-30: Buffalo River, Kent Walters;
April 27; Spring Flotilla, Canoe Trail Goliad, San Antonio River.

  Mr. Walters gave the Purser’s report. We’re $100.00 over budget for the month, because of the expenses of the 100 Miler Awards, but that’s OK. Or so he claims.

  Paul Woodcock
  Mr. Woodcock gave the Boatswain’s report. We have two new members, Troy Gilbreth and Kurt Muller. There were two visitors.

  Mr. Bodson spoke about training with the US Fish and Wildlife Service for monitoring freshwater mussels in Texas rivers. Mr. Ohrt spoke about proposed changes to the Clean Water Act. Tom Douglas said that the US Corps of Engineers was taking comments on the Wallisville Master Plan.

  Mr. Roy introduced the evening’s speaker, Prof. Antoinette Quigg, from TAMU-Galveston. She gave a very interesting presentation on phytoplankton in Texas coastal waters and the Gulf of Mexico. There were many questions.

Dan Roy   Antonietta Quiqq

  Mr. Naeger asked for a motion to adjourn. It was moved, seconded, and approved.
