Speaker:    Linda Day
Description:
"The current state of the San Marcos River"

For decades the San Marcos River between Westerfield and Sculls has been a go-to destination for a trip down a pristine Texas River through towering cypress trees. This stretch of the river features enough easy whitewater to make the trip exciting, and until a few years ago there were not enough tubers to be annoying.

Now that is all changed, with the addition of three large tubing companies along that stretch of the river. About four to five thousand tubers pollute the average summer weekend, and that number balloons to 10,000 tubers on "festival" weekends. By and large, many of the tubers are drunk - sexual assaults and deaths are disturbingly frequent.

Tom and Paula Goynes, who own a campsite near the put-in, have been fighting the tubing companies from the outset. Come find out what has happened so far, and what you can do.
