Description:
The Canadian Galapagos - Paddling Haida Gwaii

   Kim Head

Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) is the most northern Canadian paddling grounds on the Pacific, just south of the Alaskan Panhandle. Translated literally as “islands of the people”, this archipelago is the ancestral homeland of the Haida, the dominant tribe which produced most of the West Coast totem poles. The southern half of the area is a marine preserve wilderness park, Gwaii Hanaas, established in 1985 to prevent further logging.

The region is currently in the midst of environmental concern for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline route to ship Canada’s bitumen rich oils to Asia.

This travelogue includes a visit to Rose Harbor, an important whaling station in the Pacific where a whale was processed every day during the late 1800’s. We’ll also see the ancient Haida village of Ninstints, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and media images of the first new totem pole raised in more than 50 years!

Kim Head sea kayak-camped this historically rich and important region in 2012 with two guides and 7 other paddlers from the Pacific International Kayak Association (www.pikakayak.com). He is a member and trip leader of HASK (Houston Area Sea Kayakers) and has enjoyed several multi-day trips along the absolutely gorgeous northern Pacific Coast.

Be sure to set this date aside on your calendar, then come out and support your club.
